PRAYER UPDATE - OCTOBER 2010
WEEK 1: 1st – 9th October
Thank God for a peaceful and smooth voting process for the Proposed Constitution during the referendum that was held on 4th August 2010. Thank God for the positive attitude which was all over the country. Pray for the government as it embarks on the implementation process of the new constitution.
Thank God for the International Scripture Union Council, Executive Committee meeting and the International SU team meetings ( 24th September – 1st October) in Nairobi, Kenya. Please pray decisions taken will be effectively carried out, at International, Regional and National levels.
SU EAST AND WEST ASIA REGIONAL COUNCIL MEETING 2010
Please bring before our Almighty God, the following meetings that will be held at
Narita View Hotel, Narita, Japan.
5th-6th Oct: SU E/W Asia Ministry Team Meeting:

6th Oct: Opening Ceremony of the 2010 Regional Council Meeting – to be hosted by
Scripture Union Japan
7th & 9th Oct: Regional Council meeting
9th Oct: Annual General Secretaries’ / National Directors’ meeting
9th Oct: (Night): New Executive Committee meeting
Please pray that the annual meeting of movements from around East and West Asia will bring about not only further impact in the ministry of Scripture Union throughout the Region, but also a time of mutual encouragement, especially for those serving in very lonely and challenging situations. Pray for our Chairman, Dr. Jerip Susul as he leads in the meeting.
Pray for SU Japan hosting the Regional Council Meeting for the first time. Pray especially for Rev. Tadashi Oyamada and his team of volunteers and staff as they look into every detail of hosting the Regional Council Meeting.
KOREA (1st -2nd October)
Please uphold the National Convention of SU Korea in your prayer; that these 2 days of coming together will bring about greater love for God’s Word and the Bible Ministry throughout the whole country. Pray too that through this Convention, there will be greater unity in Spirit, in vision and in missions.
On 11th September, a number of new Council members were elected at AGM. Please pray that they will soon understand and settle quickly into SU philosophy and aims in ministry.
SARAWAK (3rd October)
Please uphold our staff team and volunteers as they deputise for SU Sarawak at the SIB Church, Olive Garden, Kuching today. Pray that the church will respond positively and become partner with SU Sarawak.
SABAH: (8th -9th October)
Please pray for the Sports Day of some of the School Christian Fellowships in the northern part of Sabah, to be held during these two days. Pray for safety for the young people.
WEEK 2: 10th – 16th October
ENGLAND AND WALES
Tim Hastle-Smith started work as the new National Director in September. Please pray for him as he meets volunteers and staff over the coming weeks and starts to make new connections which will raise the profile of Scripture Union’s worldwide ministry across England and Wales.
The LAUSANNE III CONGRESS will take place in Cape Town, South Africa this week with thousands of participants attending the event and linked via other media. This will include many SU Staff and volunteers including Remo Paul (SU International Executive) and Janet Morgan, SU International Director. Please pray for all of those involved and particularly the ‘Bible in Mission’ presentations that Janet has helped to prepare.
Pray also that the Congress will have some key input around children’s issues. Pray for this partnering initiative between the Global Children’s Forum, the 4-14 Movement and Viva that it will impact global mission in the 21st Century.
Please uphold our Gen. Secretary, Elder Paul Liao, who will be conducting evangelistic meetings in many Chinese Churches in the USA from Oct.15-Nov.22.
Pray that many people will come to the saving knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ through these evangelistic efforts made by the Chinese speaking churches.
We have about 200 small SU Bible Study Groups in the country. Please pray for the leaders of these groups, that they will be able to lead the members into greater obedience of the Word.
WEEK 3: 17th – 24th October
SOUTH ASIA – NEPAL
Thank God for the various ministries that SU Nepal is able to carry out in this nation in spike of the many challenges. Pray especially for the ministry among school children, both in elementary and high school over the school vacation in October and November:
a. ministry among poor children of Thapathali slum area
b. Vacation Bible School at Lamjung (12-14th October)
c. Vacation Bible School at Surkhet ( 3rd – 5th November)
d. Teachers’ Training for the vacation Bible School (11th Oct. and 2nd November)
e. Youth Conference in Lalitpur (24th October)
f. Sunday School Teachers Training (25th -27th October)
g. SU Staff and Family Retreat (28th -29th October)
SOUTH ASIA LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT:
Ravi Navaratnam and Wendy Strachan are working with SU in Nepal and Pakistan in the areas of leadership development and children’s Ministry from October 21-November 7. Please pray that this will be a time of encouragement and challenge.
Please pray for Ms. Lucia (the General Secretary) and her husband, Rev. Cheung who will be doing a 6-hour seminar on Christian parenting at the Macau Baptist Convention on 23rd Oct. Pray that the parents attending the Seminar will be richly blessed.
Please pray for the SU and the Teachers’ Christian Fellowship (TCF) Prayer Meeting on Oct. 17, that both the SU Council and staff, and TCF leaders will be refreshed as they come together in prayer.
Please bring before the Lord, a member of our Christian Fellowship in Sematan High School, Suzy Christina who was knocked down by a car on September 1st, who until the date of writing is still in the ICU. Pray that the Lord will bring about an amazing recovery.
CENTRAL ASIA: Kyrgyzstan
The ethnic tension between the Kyrgyz and the Uzbec people is still hovering around the country. Pray that peace will surely prevail. Pray for our SU staff that they will be able to minister in spite of the situation.
WEEK 4: 25th – 31st October
AFRICA REGIONAL COUNCIL MEETING: (25th – 28th October)
Please pray for the council members from all over Africa, travelling to Johannesburg, South Africa for this annual meeting. Pray especially for the election of a new Regional Chairman to be carried out during the meeting.
PENINSULA MALAYSIA (27th -28th October)
Please bring before our Lord this Forward Planning Meeting of SU Peninsula Malaysia to finalise plan for 2011. There are some major changes in the leadership team, and also the retirement of some key staff members. Please pray for the chairman, Mr. Lee Wee Min, as he leads in this meeting. Gim Lam will also be attending the meeting.
Please pray especially for some new recruits for the Camping Ministry Team and the Northern Malaysia team urgently.
Continue to pray for the ENTERPRISE RESOURCE PLANNING (ERP) team as they reorganise the whole computer system and computerise the whole administrative and ministry systems of SU Korea, that the Lord will give them the wisdom to bring about a new effective system and also that some additional staff can be recruited to work on it.
Please continue to uphold in your prayer the office team, the dispatch team and administrative staff teams with many duties and responsibilities especially in keeping dead-lines. Pray for good health for the team.
THE REGIONAL OFFICE:
Please pray for the Regional Office, especially for Mr. Chan Wah See, our accountant with his big responsibility of keeping the account of the Regional Office, even beyond
2010. The main Regional Office will move to Japan:

The current office will be kept as a branch office for Rev. Tadashi Oyamada when he visits Malaysia, for Jason Fong, the Youth Ministry Coordinator and for Mr. Chan Wah See, the accountant.
Ms. Carol Chow who has been helping Gim Lam as an administrative assistant will retire end of October. Ms. Angeline Low who is doing the last issue of ‘A Part’, our newsletter, will also stop after completing the editing.
Gim Lam plans to take leave in November; and wrap up all the administrative matters of office in December before Rev. Tadashi Oyamada takes over on 1st January 2011.
Pray for a tidy closure of all matters related to the office.
